Systemic Antibiotics – Chloramphenicol

Composition

Each capsule contains : Thiamphenicol 500 mg

Opiphen Dry Syrup contains : Thiamphenicol 125 mg/ 5 ml

Indication

• Salmonella sp
• H. Influenzae, especially meningeal infections
• Rickettsia
• Lymphogranulom - psittacosis
• Gram negative bacteria, not for hepatobillier infection and gonorrhea

Thiamphenicol relatively safe compared with Chloramphenicol

Recommended Dosage

Adult, children and infants > 2 weeks : 50 mg/kg/day in 3 - 4 divided doses

Infants < 2 weeks and premature infants : 25 mg/kg/day in 4 divided doses

Contraindication

Hypersensitivity, hematopoietic disorders, anuria, severe hepatic insufficiency.
